What is the International Year
of Planet Earth?

The International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) is a U.N. declared event to bring countries together to focus collaboratively on the Earth sciences. The IYPE aims to ensure greater use of the knowledge accumulated by the world’s 400,000+ Earth scientists. The Year’s ultimate goal is to help build safer, healthier, and wealthier societies around the globe. International Year activities will run through December 2009.

Celebrating IYPE in the United States

Discovery Earth

The U.S. National Committee (USNC) for IYPE is supplying content for the Discovery Channel's new Web site, Discovery Earth.  Four photo essays and one quiz have generated over one million page-views to date! We will continue providing engaging geoscience material to Discovery Earth to celebrate IYPE through December 2009.

Celebrating IYPE around The Globe

Earth Science Expertise in Africa

As a part of the IYPE global legacy, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will begin an Earth Science Education Project in Africa later this year. Four workshops will be held to create an inventory of the centers of geoscientific expertise in Africa and to investigate the gaps that exist.

YES Congress, China

The first Young Earth-Scientists (YES) Congress for geoscientists under the age of 35 will be held at the University of Geosciences, in Beijing, China from 25 to 28 October 2009. Abstracts for oral presentations, poster presentations, and roundtable symposia will be accepted until 30 May.

The conference will discuss global climate and environmental and geological challenges facing today's society, with goals to establish an interdisciplinary global network of individuals committed to solving these challenges.
